The Full Moon in Cancer shines a spotlight on areas in your life that need nurturing, tender loving care, and emotional tending. As you begin the New Year by structuring your goals, crafting the year ahead, and handling the administrative duties that the Capricorn sun brings, the Cancer moon reminds you to loving nurture all that is growing in your life.

As the only element in which you can see your reflection, Water functions as a mirror. It reveals what needs tending in your emotional world. The darker days of winter can give you time to go inside yourself and tend to your emotions. Scorpio, a Water sign, creates the eighth gate of awareness, teaching the power of feelings. It experiences the complete range of feelings, from icy and frozen to hot and steamy, and everything in-between. Its training is to learn to master its response to them. Intense and passionate about what lies well beneath the surface of current awareness, it travels deep into its feeling waters. There it connects to source, and uses the treasures it discovers there to generate life force in itself and others. It possesses a potent intuition, or sixth-sense, and an ability to travel into other realms of consciousness.

The deeply feeling water sign of Scorpio knows how to traverse the terrain between shadow and light. It can also bring the shadow to light in any facet of life, from what has been unsaid or unfelt in a situation, to the places where criticism, judgment, jealousy, betrayal, and backstabbing exist in our relationships and in experiences, such as leadership. Scorpio shows us how to see and feel what is hidden from plain sight.

The shadowy side of leadership can rear its head anytime someone steps into a position of responsibility for something. It can come in many forms from the leader who abuses their power by torturing or killing others such as Hitler, to those who choose to destroy a leader who is making a contribution, such as Martin Luther King.

For those with more ordinary lives, stepping into a leadership position can also bring its shadowy side effects. A backlash can occur whether you are contributing your energy as a volunteer or getting paid for your service. Whether you are leading a project, an event, a group, a company, a political office, a classroom, or simply being the one willing to show up center stage.

Those unwilling to create, to take responsibility, or step into a leadership position themselves, often without realizing it, project their judgment, criticism, fear, and jealousy on to the most visible person in the situation. Instead of stepping in to assist in creating the best experience possible, they use their energy to tear down and even destroy, either the situation, or the person or people who were willing to take responsibility.

It takes an extremely high level of emotional development and consciousness to determine if you are projecting on to someone in a leadership position. So often childhood “authority issues” arise so subtly that they are hard to detect.

As adults, we often don’t want anyone to “lead us” but we want things done that we don’t want to do ourselves. So we end up in a strange love/hate relationship with those actually willing to take responsibility to do what we don’t want to do. We find ourselves thinking they should be doing more than they are, while simultaneously criticizing and judging what they are doing.

Scorpio can help us look deeply beneath the surface to determine what we are truly holding, judging, or contributing to a situation, not just what we “think” we are bringing to the table. We may believe we are adding to the creation energy, at work for example, when in fact we may be subtly undermining what others are doing by being passively aggressive.

In this Scorpio New Moon, it is essential to your forward motion in the year ahead to determine what lies beneath the surface. Only when you see the truth can you clear any old issues that may be sabotaging your own creations, undermining and judging others, or keeping you from stepping into your full potential.

Let me give you an example of how important knowing how to apply them can be if you are a teacher, trainer, or facilitator. Basically if you are teaching anyone, anything, you need to be sure and include each of the elements.

Earth/Physical: You need a step-by-step system that layers in the skills of your subject effectively. Each stage of development needs to be mastered before you add in the next level of learning. You want to take the learner from their current abilities to the desired accomplished skill capacity.

Water/Emotional: Your learners need to feel emotionally safe and supported to expand their abilities. When your trainees or students are fearful or frustrated they contract and it makes it challenging to absorb the subject. You need to help them move beyond their contracted feelings into emotional stability and competency.

Air/Mental: The thoughts and beliefs your learners hold about themselves and the subject are critical to their overall success. As the educator you build a mindset bridge from your students current mental models to the chosen outcome. You help the learner to focus their mental energy in order to develop their next skill set.

Fire/Action: Part of the job of a facilitator involves inspiring others to take action. Learners must apply energy toward any skill they are developing to achieve mastery. As a teacher you demonstrate accomplishment each time you actively show the end result.

Spirit/Essence: The more you can help your trainees fully engage and connect to the subject the deeper the learning will be for them. You also uncover the unique talents of each student and help them to bring out their abilities. As you assist them in choosing to be more effective in the subject area you draw out their success.

Leaving out any one of the elemental realms weakens your teaching results. As a facilitator, teacher, or trainer adding an understanding and basic skills with the elements can help your personal life and it can improve your training results tremendously.

My self-doubt doesn’t just come around when I preparing to do something big that I’ve never tried (although it’s done that many times) it really likes to saunter up and sit down after I’ve had the courage to step out in a new way. It loves to say, “are you sure you did that right” or “should you have said that”?

I wonder where that voice came from? How long did it stop me from going for my dreams before I learned how to move around it, through it, in spite of it, and then finally to dance with it?

Seriously, last summer, I was up to my shoulders in huge wave of self-doubt because I had stopped doing my facilitation business, in the way that I had been doing it the past eleven years, and I’d just spent months learning this whole online thing — figuring out what to do and how to do it. I felt like it was going no where and so here came the questions “had I lost my mind, is this was a wild goose chase, what was I thinking, would any sane woman would attempt this” you get the idea.

So this crisis day, I went downstairs and put on my favorite song, it’s an old Journey song but I love the Glee version Don’t Stop Believing. I just started dancing wildly and belted the song! I looked right in my eyes in the mirror and said to myself “I’m doing the right thing and I’m going to believe in you no matter what.” I just moved and moved and moved until I got that old doubt out.

And I am not kidding, the very next day I received the call saying I had been chosen as a Hay House Mover and Shaker. So instead of allowing my self-doubt to stop me or send me another seemingly safer direction, I danced through it, and ended up soaring. Not only was all the time I spent learning the whole on-line business vital for my next steps, I was told it went into the overall Hay House decision.

Now anytime I need an energetic boost to carry me through I dance. Recently, I’ve started playing the powerful song from Jana Stanfield’s If I Were Brave.

Try it sometime, when you bump up against those walls of self-doubt, really do some dancing! Honestly I think nothing but dancing will do because you need to really move and shake your physical container to get that old doubt out.
