WHEEL OF THE YEAR POINT: May Day also known as Beltane

Celebrated May 1 Exact May 5

Beltane is the cross-quarter Wheel of the Year point following Spring Equinox. Also known as May Day, it marks the starting point of the turn toward summer. The flowers are in full bloom, and the days are definitely longer.

Beltane is the starting point for the growing summer season. The Solar Fire and the Earth Goddess unite now and bring forth new plants to feed the multitudes. This union of Earth and Fire is essential for the growth of crops, so it is honored with feasting and ceremony. The dance of the May Pole, for instance, represents and celebrates the powerful union of the masculine and feminine principles.

Each of us carries internally the two basic principles of masculine and feminine within our consciousness, and at this time of year you can find value in noticing how they are working together. Those two principles must join within you for any creation to come to fruition. Honor how they both work, and notice what they want to fertilize with their combined energy.

Bask in the beauty of this point of the seasonal cycle. Enjoy being outside, and give thanks to the marriage of Earth and Solar Fire, which bring us these gifts. Connect to the flowers and fairy folk in this window.

Personal Creation Ideas to Work With May Day/Beltane

  • Honor the Goddess Flora and the flower realm. Create a May Basket of flowers to give to some one in need of care. Wear flowers in your hair or decorate your home with them. Plant flowers in your garden.
  • Honor the union of the masculine and feminine principles. Take time to internally connect with each of them through journaling, then ask what they want you to know. Is there something they are choosing to bring forth?
  • Ceremonially dress in bright colors and patterns and honor the abundant beauty of the season.
  • Energize your money or wealth by giving it attention. Create a financial plan. Start tracking all your income.
  • Feel the fullness of gratitude for all you have and the abundance of Mother Earth.

Professional or Business Ideas for Working With May Day/Beltane

  • Bring flowers into your office. Beautify your work space.
  • Update your image and wardrobe.
  • Create a new business financial plan for the rest of the year.
  • Energize how much you want flowing into your business.
  • Pay attention to ideas for financial growth during this window and act on the best ones.
  • Be grateful for all the blessings and financial flow you have received.

If you have the Elemental Forces of Creation Oracle you may want to draw cards for additional guidance from each element. If you don’t yet have one you can simply connect to each element and journal with it.

Elemental Journaling: Take the time to listen to each element and their message to you for fertility for the active growing season.

Give thanks to Earth and ask “What do my creations need at this time to flourish?”

Give thanks to Water and ask “What do my creations need at this time to flourish?”

Give thanks to Air and ask “What do my creations need at this time to flourish?”

Give thanks to Fire and ask “What do my creations need at this time to flourish?”

Give thanks to Spirit and ask “What do my creations need at this time to flourish?”

Now ask all of the elements and Spirit together for a unified creation message for your creations to flourish.

Element: Earth

Ah…From the fiery, get moving Aries Sun we now move into the pleasure days of the Taurus Sun. Taurus says, “relax and enjoy the sensuality of spring. Open to receive the renewal that beauty brings.”

It’s time to savor every moment of life and indulge your senses as you connect to the reawakening Earth.

This time of year gently renews and restores both your body and soul as the healing qualities of spring flowers and the fresh leaves on the trees open to reveal their essence. The Tibetans use this time of year to heal from grief and illness by literally sitting downwind from flowers. They know the profound medicine of renewal that comes from the fresh pollen.

To experience the greatest level of personal spring renewal, go be with the flowers and fresh leaves. The period of fresh blooms only exists for a few weeks each year. Take advantage of it. Go to your local flower center, botanical garden, or garden tour. Bathe all your senses in this precious substance.

Also, get your hands dirty by planting some of your own flowers. Connecting with the soil enriches the body’s harmony with the Earth realm.

Find time some lovely afternoon to lie on the ground and relax, feeling the precious Earth underneath. This will strengthen your relationship to the physical realm. Taurus treasures the pleasure of all the physical senses. Enjoy. Luxuriate. Get a massage. Take time to renew on every level.

Refresh your physical world by spring-cleaning your house, freshening your garden, and fluffing your wardrobe and physical appearance.

And remember your physical world relationship to your finances. Taurus loves the pleasures that money can provide and works toward a secure stable economic flow. Allow this sign to support your financial goals this month.

Four times a year, when the sun or new moon are in Earth signs, it is extremely helpful and important to focus on taking solid steps toward your financial goals. This quarterly energy of anchoring helps you to stabilize and support the other elements, so that they all work together effectively throughout the year toward your prosperity.

With the Cross Quarter Day Imbolc

Celebrated on February 1 or 2

Imbolc is the cross-quarter Wheel of the Year point following Winter Solstice. Also known as Brighid’s day or Candlemas, it marks the starting point of spring. Here you begin to subtly notice that the days are lengthening and, depending on the area you live in, you may actually start to see signs of spring. Here in Georgia where I live, the daffodils consistently open sometime around Imbolc, although this year they may be later because of a colder winter. When they do start the daffodils begin the steady wave of beautiful bloom that lasts through the glorious spring.

For others in colder climates, Imbolc may simply bring the promise of spring as the light of the sun slowly begins to increase. Tune in this year to the subtle shifts you notice in the air and light around and after Imbolc. What does it signal internally for you? What things do you get a renewed urge to do?
