Flooding

By

IMG_0334For the past five years my partner Scott and I have been blessed to live on the precious yellow river. September 22, 2009, this sweet river spilled over the 100 year flood line and into our neighborhood. If you saw the news you know it also hit many other places in the Atlanta area.

The water rose so fast it was unreal. During our time here it has flooded over its banks several times so we weren’t too concerned at first. But when we saw it pouring into the cul de sac now that was something to get alarmed about. We noticed this around noon and walked down to take a look. By 1pm it was rising so fast we decided we needed to get our computers and get out as there were many roads closing.

In the two hours it took us to pack up and get out it went from one house flooded and a small portion of another to over taking the one house completely, flooding the cul de sac and coming very close to us.

When we returned home the waters had begun receding but this is what our neighborhood still looked like the next day. The night before the water went over the roof of the house you see in the picture below.

The picture’s below are from our neighbor’s deck 3 houses down. The water flooded their basement completely. Then it flooded the house next to them leaving one house between us and the rising water.

As we were packing and leaving I was talking with the water and asking it to recede, for the sun to come out, for our house to be protected, and for as much protection as possible for the area. Then I know many of my friends and the Natural Rhythms facilitators began prayer work.

We were blessed to make it to my sisters and to be graced with a night with her loving family while we sat around watching the power of water over take the city on television. I just kept thinking about those who experienced Katrina and the sumani a few years ago. The forces of nature both destroy and create and sometimes it happens quickly and without warning.

I was reminded to get very clear about what is important if you need to evacuate. I choose to create an better plan for the future because it is hard to think clearly in this kind of crisis mode. My neighbor said she kept thinking it would stop so there were things she didn’t take off her walls that she could have while she watched her freezer float down the river.

Thankfully today when we came home our house, neighbors, and kitties were safe. My heart goes out to all those who experience was different.

Thank you to all of you who sent prayer help and who continued to send prayers for assistance and support for all those still experiencing the loss of security, lives, and property. I am always reminded just how much prayer works, no matter what aspect of the divine you pray to or what religion you believe in, and talking with the elements can’t change everything but it certainly helps.

In gratitude, Lisa
